About the Artist

I was in the 4th grade at Waterman Elementary School in Fairfield, California. Leanne Waddell sat in the row on my right, three seats back. One particularly dull day I sketched her face. It was a good sketch and I was proud of it, but I didn’t want anybody to think I liked her (you know, liked her) so I added a naked torso. In my defense, I drew her arms crossed over what would be her breasts in a few more years. I showed the picture to my friends, who laughed and pointed at Leanne. She got hold of the picture and turned beet red. The teacher finally got her hands on the sketch and I was promptly sent to the principal’s office. All that fuss over a drawing…

I've scribbled, sketched, and painted my way through life. I've filled reams and reams of paper. Murals came and went on my parents’ walls. For a while in my early teens I had a few "automatic writing" episodes, where I held the pen or pencil, but the drawing seemingly drew itself, usually at absurdly quick speeds. I did a landscape on the felt of a cheap, aging pool table that way when I was around fourteen. Sort of an odd Italianate thing. I had no idea where it came from. Needless to say my parents and siblings were less than thrilled by the new drawing on the pool table.

As far as the work itself, these days I spend a lot of time trying to pull my ego out of the way so that something real can come out. The hard part is simply getting out of my own way. If I can pull back long enough, the thing usually comes together.

There are hundreds of paintings in the houses of relatives, friends, and friends of friends, as well as an accumulation of years still to be cataloged in my attic. The paintings and sculptures shown here are just the last few years' worth, the only things that I’ve still got, and which I think are good enough. Hope you’ll agree.
